A Year of Starcraft II

Still Here

I’m sorry for the lack of updates here, it’s been a rough couple of weeks.  I think it’s strange how much external factors effect my play, but along with the shitload of personal things I’m dealing with, I’ve really been crapping out in game lately.  Still mid-level gold, haven’t even moved up much.  It gets harder and harder each day to start the stream and play for hours at a time.  If I’m not streaming, it’s somewhat easier, perhaps because I’m not worried about people seeing how crap I’m playing.  I am still loving Starcraft, watching Dailies and Gom, but I guess I’m upset with myself at how much I suck.  There have been a some bright days, where I’ll win five or six in a row, but those are few and far between.

I’ve tried to get advice, from one GM player and another Diamond, I think it was.   I feel like I’m missing something.  And I told those players that.  It feels like there’s something in the game, that I’m not doing correctly and that’s what is screwing up my play.  But no one can pinpoint one thing.  Maybe it’s not even one thing.  The answer I’ve gotten is just, “Play more.  You’ll learn.”  I have to say it’s kind of disheartening.  I want to be better.  I can’t say I’ve learned everything (I know I haven’t), but I do know what to look for and what should be coming when for the most part.  I know what the units can do, the muscle memory is there for every single hotkey I have, I have builds I use for specific match-ups, I alter those builds based on what I see coming.  And still I lose.  I am hovering around 50% win rate (using SC2 gears, over all of my games since I started).  Perhaps I’m just a gold level player.

Reading over this, I sound really stupid and whiny, thinking there’s one thing that could make me a better player.  It is really all of the little mistakes adding up to equal crap play.  Missing an overlord here, my army being out of position there, not droning when I could, making drones when I shouldn’t, and all of those things tip the game further and further in my opponent’s favor.  It’s the small things that I’m sucking at and need work.  Instead of being disheartened, I need to pick one and work on it for a week, then pick another, then go back to the first, and repeat.  This is how getting better works, I can’t just keep playing and expect to magically get better. I have gotten out of that mindset and into the entitled, “I should be better than this,” bullshit mindset.  That doesn’t work.

Overlords.  I won’t miss a goddamn overlord.  I will focus so hard on this, I will lose games.  That is my goal this week.

Thanks to those who left comments asking me where I was.  I needed to come back here and actually think about what’s going on.  Through it all, having to write this blog and actually think about what I’m doing has been the biggest help.  Without that, I’m just playing with myself (:O).

GLHR!

Hang in there .We’re still here.

Whenever I get in to a slump, which happens about once every 50 games, I simplify my play to an almost comical level. This actually helps me win a lot more. Example:

I kept getting beat by Terran MMM or marine/tank. My unit comp was slightly off, or my positioning was bad, or a made 1 too many many rounds of drones, whatever. I kept losing to that 10 minute push. So, instead of trying to hone my game, I just started making banelings. Like, at 8 minutes, I’d just pump a ton of lings, and when I saw a push, I’d make as many banes as my gas would allow. Then, I would never stop. Just keep making banelings. Fuck mutas, infestors, hive tech, bleh.

What happened? I’ve been stomping terrans. I think it’s a combo of the fact that high platinum terrans dont have micro to deal with banes + the simplified unit comp allows me to macro better and spend better. Either way, my only goal was based on the fact that I hate facing banelings, so why not make a shit ton of them?

With Toss, I kept doing a fast third and trying to ling flood to beat FFE. It stopped working for some reason… I kept barely dying before mutas came out. So, instead of making 30 lings, I’d make 6 spines. Spines are annoying for protoss, and I like that. Result? Winning vs. most FFEs now.

Moral: Stop trying to be gosu and choose 1 simple strategy. Think of the units you HATE facing from zerg players, and make a bunch of those.

I took your advice last night, went ling-muta (I hate facing this against another Zerg) vs. a Toss and boy was he pissed. Heh, I actually enjoyed the whining he did about “Oh, never seen that unit composition before.” Thanks 🙂

That’s cool. I also do a muta-ling vs protoss, but keep lings as just a poking/third denial/time push fighting force. Then, I just mass mass mass muta. Protoss HATE mutas. I even got hit by a 200/200 Protoss deathball made of 3 collosus, 6 voidrays, and the rest stalkers. I MURDERED it with about 40 2/0 mutas and about 30 lings. The was very pissed and rage quit, of course.

The only times I lose this is when the P goes a strange quick-storm, mass archon, or mass air. Even then, I have so many drones that I just build stuff all over the map and go for the base trade. Also wins very often. I haven’t lost a game yet where I’m allowed to max on a ton of mutas vs. P.

Keep going, I’ve been checking your battle.net page and hoping you’re still playing a lot. I’m in gold league too and have been stuck there for too long, I’ve spent a lot of time using the team liquid multi tasking trainer and thats really helped a lot. It also gives time away from 1v1’s so that your mindset can settle and be fresher when you come back. Its better to practice specific weaknesses than just play endless 1v1’s sometimes. Change your routine and your perspective!

You have everything you need, just cultivate that passion. If you have a EU account we could skype and play games together, having a good time with the game. I think thats what you need to improve. How could you focus on the game and what needs to be done if you not SUPER INTERESTED in doing so.

Reply if you’d like a positive practice partner. 😀

Hey, I’m a diamond zerg-toss and I might be able to give you some pointers. Send me an email if you wanna do some practice. I’m usually on on the weekends.

Don’t worry about it, I think everyone with little RTS experience has to go through the same experience of plateauing. It’s taken me four seasons to get from Bronze to Platinum (Zerg here). It takes ages to really master the leagues. Keep up the good work 🙂

Yeah, it feels like I go through this every two months or so. This has just been extra hard. But I think I’ve stumbled on a good way to practice and have fun: one day of focus, one day of just playing. It gives me a day to just stare at and focus on what I’m trying to improve, and the next day when I’m playing to win, I’m using that skill more in my normal rotation. I think that this may work better than me than Day9’s week on, week off method.

Hey, glad to see you are still around.

I think you should post replays to your blog or reddit. It will get you helpful feedback as to what you need to work on instead of just complaining about it

Also, working on making overlords might not improve your game as much as you think. There are other things that you can work on that will significantly improve your gameplay such as unit composition, drone timing, gas timing, spending all your gas, etc… Making overlords is only a small part of the game. Unless you are constantly getting supply blocked at 40 food every single game or get supply blocked right before getting attack, I don’t believe that working on your overlords would significantly make you better.

That being said, the mistakes you make during a game all have different levels of severity. Some mistakes will outright lose you the game while some other mistakes won’t affect the outcome that much. I don’t think you know which mistakes are the minor ones and which mistakes are the serious ones yet. You need to know which mistakes are more serious so you can work on those first.

So to help you quickly fix this. Please post some replays. Preferably a few at a time.

Have you tried troll builds for fun and to practice macro/multi tasking? I got the idea when I was watching Dragon stream and do all these hilarious builds (and win!) vs gold-diamond. If he spawned as terran vs zerg, he’d do PF and expand and mine everything out and go raven. If he was zerg, he’d do a proxy hatch to roaches and kill them that way. Anyway, might be fun to work on micro and multitasking. Just a thought! 🙂
